Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
