The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
