The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could assist individuals reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Experts Voice Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting products of unknown origin.

Some experts stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Selling retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers try to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or prison.

Platform Reaction and Material Elimination

Based on the social media company, the service has taken down violative content and prohibited associated keywords and search suggestions. The organization stated it was dedicated to maintaining the service safe and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

After minutes of entering one community, a seller posted contact information, where most purchases occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about weight, health issues or past usage.

Within these communities, messages display black plastic parcels with postal service labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Measures

A representative for Telegram said it regularly monitored harmful content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to current price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.
